Word Art: We will be creating a word that represents you and clipping pictures that represent you into it. The word needs to tell me who you are. That is not easy, picking one word to describe yourself. Then you will clip in pictures that represent everything I need to know about you into that word. A new technical word for you in this assignment is vector graphics: Unlike JPEGs, GIFs, and BMP images, vector graphics are not made up of a grid of pixels. Instead, vector graphics are comprised of paths, which are defined by a start and end point, along with other points, curves, and angles along the way. A path can be a line, a square, a triangle, or a curvy shape. These paths can be used to create simple drawings or complex diagrams. Paths are even used to define the characters of specific typefaces.
Because vector-based images are not made up of a specific number of dots, they can be scaled to a larger size and not lose any image quality. If you blow up a raster graphic, it will look blocky, or "pixelated." When you blow up a vector graphic, the edges of each object within the graphic stay smooth and clean. This makes vector graphics ideal for logos, which can be small enough to appear on a business card, but can also be scaled to fill a billboard. Common types of vector graphics include Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, and EPS files. Many Flash animations also use vector graphics, since they scale better and typically take up less space than bitmap images.

If you do graphics you will be referred to as AD which stands for Advanced Graphics. If you do 3D modeling you will be referred to as G for Gamers. AD: Time for Day of the Dead skull. This will be done in Illustrator. The 2 jpg's below are skulls that you can choose from and trace to do your designs. Do not use any other skulls. There are many skulls out there that all ready have designs on them and I want original work, using one of these files insures you all start out the same. You can however, draw your own skull. You can trace the skull but you cannot trace the designs. You must create the designs yourself. I have provided the 3 tutorials below for you to use to create your designs. The brush ai file is the file you will need for the " How to do simple swirls and florals". It is the file for the brushes he uses. I will show you how to load them into Illustrator brush palette. You will need to change the preferences to inches instead points. I will show you how. Create a new Illustrator file 8.5 in by 11 in, hit advanced, change the color mode to RGB and the raster effects to 300 ppi. AD:Time to step out of your comfort zone. When you design you might have customers that ask for something you are not familiar with. I am going to introduce you to 3 design styles you may or may not have seen before.

Punk: The punk phenomenon (London, c. 1976) expressed a rejection of prevailing values in ways that extended beyond the music. British punk fashion deliberately outraged propriety with the highly theatrical use of cosmetics and hairstyles, clothing typically adapted or mutilated existing objects for artistic effect: pants and shirts were cut, torn, or wrapped with tape, and written on with marker or defaced with paint; safety pins and razor blades were used as jewelry. While OG, original gangsters, punks would have probably never used the word ‘haute’ to describe themselves, they did prescribe to a certain style that valued not philosophies and beauty and order like the design that came before them, but rather chaos and a dissemination of shock. Using their often illegible and garish styles to shock the viewer out of apathy, the punk movement gave little thought to the commonly perceived ‘good’ design practices.
Steam Punk: The term “Steampunk” originated in the late 1980s with a cheeky letter to Locus Magazine from science fiction author K. W. Jeter. Jeter was trying to find an accurate description of works by himself (Morlock Night), Tim Powers (The Anubis Gates), and James Blaylock (Homunculus). While Jeter coined the word, it was William Gibson and Bruce Sterling that brought the genre attention with the book The Difference Engine (1992). Best known for their offerings in cyberpunk, Gibson and Sterling took their intimate integration of man and machine back to 1885. In this alternative Industrial Revolution, Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine is not merely a curiosity but the norm, and now his Analytical Engine comes to fruition. The book centers around the struggle between the working class Luddites (who fear technology) and the upper-class “enhanced” elite.From here, the steampunk movement gained momentum, although there are some cinematic and televised works that could easily be considered steampunk while pre-dating The Difference Engine by three decades or more. Over the years, steampunk has evolved into more than just a sub-genre of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Steampunk now extends into fashion, engineering, music, and for some, a lifestyle. With the Victorian British Empire or American Wild West as the backdrop, steampunk projects are a challenge of making something elegant out of random bits and bobs.
You will design a fashion or transportation vehicle based on one of these styles. I will show you examples of them. Use one of the models I provided earlier if you are doing fashion. AD: Time to do the second part of your "Black History Month" assignment. If you chose option #1 Apply your Kente style cloth to a African style fashion that has influenced american fashion style. Use one of the models you traced before and I will show you examples of this fashion style. Create your own look using this style as inspiration. I can help you if you don't remember how to turn the Kente cloth into a pattern so you can apply it somewhere on your design.
If you chose option #2 Use the mask you creating and change the coloring and shapes to create a new mask. Check the website I provided to understand what the color options and shapes symbolize for your new mask.

Choice #2: Your will design your own African mask. One of the main characteristics of culture of African peoples is use of masks in rituals and ceremonies. It is believed that the earliest masks were used in Africa before Paleolithic era. They represent spirits of animals or ancestors, mythological heroes, moral values or a form of honoring of a person in a symbolic way. They are made from wood, pottery, textiles, copper and bronze. Details could be made from animal teeth, hair, bones and horns as well as feathers, seashells and even straw and egg shells. Maker of the masks has a high rank in the village because it is believed that he has a contact with a spirit world and making masks is a craft passed down in the family.

Choice #1 Many of you play Video games or want to explore a career in that industry. Here is a lists of questions I would like you to answer about a game of your choice. You can do this from google docs and then attach it from google docs to your assignment in Google classroom or you can answer the questions in the comment area of the assignment. Analyzing a video game like a movie is a good idea. It has soundtrack, pictures, motion, story, characters, special effects and setting. So you could look at all those things separately and analyse them. But the difference between a movie and a video game is the interaction with the viewer. In a video game, the player can interact, he can modify the setting, the characters or the story. The impact of the player and how the player interact can be analysed.

Did you enjoy this game ? Why ? (What is the best feature of this game that made you enjoy it the most and why?)
What genre is it ? Is it original or does it look like another game? Why?
Tell me about your favorite characters in the game and tell me why they are your favorite.
Did you like the music? The story? The setting? Why or why not? Does it make the game better or is it optional?
Was it easy to play? Easy to master? Was it a challenge? Was it hard to learn at first? Why?
How does it work? Not technically but just : Is it just aim and shoot? Point and click? Move and jump? Who is the enemy and how do you kill them? Is it repetitive? Is it boring? Is it new and inventive and if so why or why not? Is there anything else to do other than the main mechanics? (Easter eggs, etc.)
Did something bother you when you played? Was the camera okay? Did your character (if there is one) move quickly and smoothly? Or were there bugs?
(Since video games are art :) What message does it send? Does it even send one? How?
Was it worth the money you payed for? If it was free, was it worth the time spent on playing?
These are general questions and it is easy to develop and justify. You could add some more by analyse a game in other ways... Like chronologically?
Choice # 2: What to use to do this assignment: I sent out information in an earlier email on how to get Adobe software for free but I also understand many of you don't have a laptop or computer that can handle the software requirements or possibly don't have a laptop, or computer, or gaming consul at all. Another software option that is free is www.photopea.com/ if you want to draw this assignment digitally use either of those software's or maybe you all ready have a drawing program you can use. You would need to give me a jpeg of the finished assignment in your student Google classroom. AD/Animators: This will count as your midterm and you will have lots of fun doing it. You are going to learn how to use After Effects with Illustrator. This video has you go to a website that let's you create a South Park character. He then shows you how to convert it to an Illustrator file that has all the layers grouped for each body part that you want to animate in After Effects. He then shows you how to bring the Illustrator file into After Effects and animate it. I will show you the one my TA did as an example. These 3 videos will help you learn how to use After Effects:

AD: Choice #1: You will be creating 3 minions in Illustrator then you will have them celebrate Easter. You need at least three different minions. Your minions will be doing thinks like hiding Easter eggs or hunting Easter eggs. Maybe one of them would be dressed as the Easter bunny, etc. Choice #2: Create 3 robots with shapes and put them in a robot world. G: Continue working on your full character from start to finish now. Use all of these tutorials, Part 1 - Part 12 to complete your character. Feel free to customize your character. This will take at least 3 weeks to finish so due date is March 29th.
You can use this Storyboard template or you can create the storyboard in Animate the way the tutorial shows you. If you use the template you would be printing out the amount of pages you would need, each box is a scene.
